Good All Round Bow
Hi, abit of a noob thread, but hmmm...
Anyway I just started playing my Ranger and i'm looking to get two different bows, for two different builds. The first one will be a poison spammer (Apply Poison and Barrage/Triple Shot/Volley) and the second will be a Blind Spammer (Ebon Dust Aura, Ebon Bow String and Triple Shot/Volley).
The problem is i dont want to buy different bow types for each build. So i was looking at getting maybe 1-2 bows for each build. But seeing as i'm new to the Ranger i have no idea which bows to choose, so i'm asking for help. Which bows would you recommend taking? I'm a PvE player also.
Cheers

Poisonous Recurve Bow and some kinda longbow. Vamp is good.
Btw... Apply Poison + Barrage is fail - Barrage removes preps.
EDA + Barrage is also fail - EDA and Barrage are both Elite.
The common factor here is Barrage... therefore Barrage = fail!
Volley isn't much good either, tbh.
If you just started playing your ranger, don't Barrage. It sucks and makes you a bad player. Learn to use Distracting Shot and Savage Shot instead. They're easily two of the best ranger skills out there.

Just as a side note if you use barrage with posion, poison wil end as barrage removes preps. tripple shot without extra dmg output can sometimes be weak...really weak, but if you had triple shot with something like kindle arrows, or glass arrwos + conjure flame with a fire bow string you can get massive dmg
Having said that recurve bows are good all round bows, they are the most accurate and have a med range, just inside agro circle.
If you go poison then a poison +33% string is good and the same with blind a blind string +33% and the insctription and handle of your choice...

There is no such thing as a "Blinding" bow string to increase blind duration.
Recurve range is also just outside the edge of the agro circle, not inside. That is shortbow/spear range you are thinking of.

poison tip signet (eotn ranger signet) worked with barrage during the preview, should still work now too, if you absolutely have to use poison and barrage in the same build

Thanks guys. The whole shooting thing is totally different to what i am used to :P

If i do manage to blind up to 6 enemies, wouldnt that be sufficient time for me to re apply? Also couldnt i just use before hte 24 seconds are up, to pre-maturely finish the preparation?

I remembered that afterwards. Silly me...
Also just re-read 'Triple Shot' and doesnt seem that good. I thought it fired three arrows at different enemies, but its three arrows at target foe.
So where would be a good collector/weapons NPC to make a Recurve Bow and a Longbow? Preferably with an inscription slot.
Edit: Just had a look on Guildwiki, and considering getting the Recurve bow from Kaineng City collector. 15-28 Dmg (req 9) +15% Dmg (health >50). Simply just add a Poisonous Bowstring, Fortitude Grip and a 'Stength and Honour' inscription (does it stack?) or a 'Hale and Hearty' inscription. How does that sound?

You should ALWAYS have a longbow with you, and for barraging i'd use a Vamp 15^50 long bow of FORTITUDE (very important). I actually dont like recurves cause i don't give a shit for the Arc.

You could use apply up until it ends then use barrage, but theres no point, it would a waste of an elite slot. Barrage has such a short recharge time that its best used when spammed like a crazy person with a zealous weapon.

recurve bow is the best all around, most accurate bow, medium range and shortest flight time.
longbow gives you a little more range which is useful especially for pulling or reaching opponements from behind obstacles but has a higher arc.
flatbow gives you range and fast refire rate but the highest arc and thus most inaccurate bow. flatbow is only useful when using the spirit favourable winds and the preparation read the wind as anything less just leaves you too big an arc.
shortbow has the shortest range, but fast refire rate and medium arc.
overall recurve is the bow of choice if you want just 1 bow.

barrage and volley will end the preparation before it fires, therefore, it will never poison anything.
poison tip signet probably only works on the target you chose to target, and won't poison any additional targets.

If you simply must run Barrage, use either a Zealous or Vampiric bow and drop the preparation. Barrage is only really useful when there's hordes upon hordes of foes that like to stay together... otherwise there's a whole lineup of other elites that outclass it: Burning Arrow, Broadhead Arrow, Prepared Shot, etc.
As for bows, definitely carry a Longbow (even if you only use it to pull) and a Shortbow weapon set to switch to if you find yourself close to the front lines. If you want to PvP, Recurve is definitely the way to go to make it harder for targets to dodge your shots... though personally I have grown addicted to Recurves and use them for general PvE use as well.

For barrage you really want a zealous longbow of fort. A recurve is also good on any build definetly the best all rounder. Dazing bow strings are good so are zealous and vamp, even if your using poison though i wouldnt take a poison string, bit of a waste...

Also, take into account which elite you plan to use. If you intend to use prep shot, you won't need a zealous bow. If using BHA, then a silencing bow may be used, yet the concept of extending conditions isn't as useful in PvP as it is in PvE.
In retrospect, you will end up with a variety of bows. For example, if an elementalist is using Mark of Rodgort, it would be to your advantage to have a fiery bow of some type. If a necromancer wants to use Spinal shivers, it would be best to use an icy bow. If you're playing interupter, then you may chose an elemental shortbow or even sundering-though I would rather go elemental and use a conjure enchantment to give a higher damage output.
Like I said, you will end up with a variety of bows.

I Suggest make multiple bows (one for barrage, one for daze/distract, one for cripple) etcccc, I don't think there's a good all around bow tbh.

only bows from Nightfall are inscribable and it should stack... if you ever find such a bow... good luck...
as for the spammer thingy... apply poison+favorable winds+flatbow+needling shot equals alot of spam...

Most rangers have several bows. I have about 10 atm, it varies though.
For your two bows, I'd say
Poisonous Recurve of something (health possibly)
Ebon Short Bow of Enchanting
The Ebon Short Bow is for several reasons - Short Bows have a high RoF, so you can get more attacks off - this helps spread conditions. With an 8 second Blind from EDA for example (I believe at 10 Earth?) you can still manage 4 attacks with the Short Bow, but only three with any other. It has lower range, but you're unlikely to need long range for blinding, it's likley to keep melee under wraps. Enchanting is pretty obvious since EDA is an enchantment.
The Poisonous recurve is a bit tough - Recurve is the best interrupting bow, and a solid choice, but it depends what build you'll be running with it - if you are doing Crip Shot I'd even go with a Crippling string instead, since the duration on the cripple is low to start with. If it's just for poison, then poisonous is fine. I have a recurve for each of barbed, silencing, poisonous and crippling, since I swap builds a lot.
You'll want at least one long range bow in your arsenal. A ranger who can't pull a target from a range in PvE is just too funny. Long or Flat, doesn't really matter. I prefer Flatbows in PvE for the DPS benefit. For GvG though I bring a Crippling longbow typically - if ganking you re-apply damage often enough to not need "poisonous", but if you want to snare a target at range the crippling Longbow can make the difference.

Long or Flat with a Recurve if you use interrupts.Barrage is good with short bow with mobs right on you.

Ultiamtely, you want to have a short, recurve, and long bow for each string set you plan to use IMO (with some variation) If you aren't that serious of a player however (not a bad thing) Recurve is your best bet, with a long bow always on standby if nothing else for the ability to pull monsters out of their patrols.
Also, running any ranger without both savage shot and distracting shot is a crime punishable by being hung by your entrails and paraded across lions arch.
